Bill Murray was heading toward a career peak on the back of comedies such as this one from 1981, the second film in his ongoing collaboration with director Ivan Reitman (the two went on to make Ghostbusters). Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). When push comes to shove, however, the smirking hero takes charge of his ragtag unit and turns them into fighting machines, albeit to the rhythm of hit songs by Manfred Mann and Sly Stone. The film is occasionally funny, but it mostly plays like any one of a dozen underachieving comedies featuring players from Saturday Night Live and SCTV. --Tom Keogh

Not my style, but still entertaining.

For me this is a "watch it every once in a while" movie. My boyfriend picked it out and we watched it together. Funny, but I can only take so much Billy Murray humor in one sitting. The storyline is a bit ridiculous, purposely, and the nudity and "crude-ity" multiply in this extended version. Not offensive, but just something that might be a factor for potential buyers. I'm kind of neutral on this one.

Great version of a classic comedy movie. This is Bill Murray at his very best. So funny. Extra scenes are great and I found this movie just as good as I remembered.

Like a lot of DVD or Blu-Ray releases, the quality of modern technology shows flaws which were in the original. I didn't find it to be a bother though. In fact, it helped me to get into the place where I was when I originally saw this movie, which made it even more enjoyable.

This is an ultimate classic that will continue to be passed down from generation to generation. I give it a four because no one other than Chevy Chase deserves a five, and that includes Jim Carey...

Stripes is probably one of the funniest comedies I've ever seen. From start to finish, it's got great characters and a great story. Also since it was made during the cold war, that element also adds a lot to it. The great thing about it is that it still holds up well too. I recommend it along with Caddyshack if you're a Bill Murray fan.
